PERIDOT – A favorite gemstone of Cleopatra which shines with a bright green glow even at night. Popular in early Greek and Roman jewelry it has been coveted since
1500 BC when the Egyptians started mining it. Peridot mining has been traditionally done at night when the gem’s natural glow makes it easier to spot. The ancient Egyptians believed that Peridot was colored by the golden glow of their sun god Ra and was thus a powerful protector from harm.
Peridot is found in China, Pakistan, South Africa and Tanzania. But did you know that the San Carlos Reservation of the Apache Indians in Arizona is famous for its abundance of Peridot? For the Apache Tribe Peridot mining is considered to be a spiritual activity. They feel that man has always looked to gemstones for a higher understanding and therefore that relationship needs to be respected. Even though large mining equipment is permitted on the Reservation most of the Peridot mining there is done by hand.
August’s birthstone is connected to healing and it is said that drinking from a Peridot goblet can increase the potency of medicines. Probably the most unusual fact about Peridot is that it has been found in meteorites, which makes it one of the few extraterrestrial gemstones known to man.
Next month Sapphires will be highlighted as the birthstone for the month of September.
